Bride and Bridesmaids Killed in Limo Fire:

SAN MATEO, Calif. – A 31-year-old bride’s fun-filled limo ride to her bridal shower ended in tragedy Saturday night when the limousine she and her bridesmaids were travelling in burst into flames while crossing the San Mateo-Hayward Bridge. Four other passengers also died in the fire, according to law enforcement.

The limo driver and four other women made it out of the burning 1999 Lincoln Town Car, which burst into flames at about 10 p.m. The bride, Neriza Fojas of Fresno, had already married her husband in a small, private ceremony and was planning to travel to the Philippines next month where she and her husband had planned another ceremony and reception for family and friends. Family members said Fojas worked as a nurse.

The five women who died in the fire were so badly burned, police said dental records were needed to confirm their identities. The four surviving women were transported to area hospitals where two were listed in critical condition; the condition of the other two was not immediately known. All were being treated for burns and smoke inhalation. Law enforcement officials said the driver walked away from the burning vehicle unhurt.

The fire is reported to have begun in the trunk of the limousine. The driver pulled the limo over after spotting the flames, but the fire spread rapidly, trapping the five passengers at the rear of the vehicle. The driver helped the four women seated toward the front of the limo escape the flames.
