Gasparilla 2022 Newsletter

Here in the Tampa Bay area, it's time for one of our favorite events that is uniquely specific to Tampa. A pirate ship and the Ye Mystic Krewe of Gasparilla will be making its way down Hillsborough Bay escorted by thousands of private boaters. Pirates will invade the Tampa convention center, and the Mayor will hand over the key to the city to the marauding bunch.

The pirate invasion

If you plan to attend the parade on Saturday January 29th, there are a couple things you should remember to keep you and your swashbuckling crew safe. In addition to the thousands of personal watercraft that will be escorting the Jose Gaspar to the Tampa convention center, there will then be a pirate parade going down Bayshore boulevard. Tens of Thousands of people will flood into the area. Tampa does not usually allow drinking in the open, but that ordinance is suspended during the Gasparilla festivities. As with any event where alcohol is consumed by pirates, there's always the chance for violence or general public drunkenness. According to the police, the past few years have remained relatively civil so let's hope that trend continues this year.

Here are some tips if you plan on attending either the boat parade or the road parade.

Please do not drink and operate any vehicle.

If you're boating, help your crew keep an eye out for other boats. It will be extremely congested with all sizes and shapes of watercraft. Boating accidents can happen very quickly especially when there's thousands of boats in one small area. Be courteous and patient with other boaters.

Parking is ridiculously limited, so expect a decent hike to the parade grounds. Parking is usually found all through the surrounding neighborhoods.

If an injury or violence happens, call the police immediately. Following that, give us a call to see if we can help you out with your situation.

Following the parade, there will be drop off locations for the beads you collect, so they can be reused for next year.

Lastly, don't drink too much, have fun and enjoy our one of a kind pirate tradition here in Tampa.
